Debunking Myths about Pet Vaccinations
We compiled some common questions about pet vaccinations and sorted the truth from the myth!
Did you know that SM holds pet vaccination drives in malls nationwide? While vets and medical professionals unanimously agree on the importance of vaccines, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with so much information out there. In this article, we compiled some common questions about pet vaccinations and sorted the truth from the myth!
True or False: Indoor pets don’t require vaccines
False! Although pets that always stay indoors might have less exposure to certain diseases, illnesses still occur in indoor spaces. Kennel cough and flea infections can happen and possibly spread in your home too.
True or False: Bigger pets need larger doses, smaller pets need smaller doses
False! Vaccine doses are not administered based on a pet’s size. Animal vaccines have been tested and have been proven to be effective for pets of all sizes at the recommended dosage. Also, giving a smaller dose of a vaccine might not give your pet the needed protection.
True or False: Pets still need additional vaccines even if they got vaccinated as puppies and kittens
True! Pets usually require annual or biannual boosters for illnesses like parvo or rabies. Some vaccines become less effective over time and some need multiple shots to become effective. We strongly encourage consulting with your vet about which boosters are needed for your pet!
True or False: Vaccines weaken my pet’s immune system
False! Vaccines actually activate immune systems! Just like for humans, vaccinations create antibodies that defend your pets from getting sick in case of exposure to certain viruses. While your pet might experience some side effects or mild sickness after a vaccine, this is usually rare and a temporary reaction.
True or False: Getting pets vaccinated keeps humans safe too
True! Some illnesses can transmit from pet to human, and vice versa. Staying up to date with your pets’ vaccines not only keeps your pets but your entire household safe and healthy!
