Flea and Tick Prevention 101

How to keep your pet and home pest-free

One downside of living in a country with a warm and humid climate? The constant threat of fleas and ticks. While other countries only go on high-alert for these pests during the summer, the Philippines can be a breeding ground year-round.

These insects don’t only feed on your pet’s blood, but can trigger other health issues too. Thankfully, there are many ways we can prevent a possible tick/flea emergency!

1. Avoid pest-breeding grounds outdoors

When you take your pet for a walk outside, avoid areas with tall grasses and piles of leaves. These areas are favorite spots for insects where they can easily jump onto your pet’s fur!

2. Secure trash cans

Another favorite hiding spot? Your trash! Fleas and ticks love dark and warm places, so securing your trash cans gives them less chances to hide in your home! For extra precaution, make sure your pet doesn’t go near where you store your trash too.

3. Clean up fallen fruit

If you have trees outside your home, make sure to clear out any fallen fruit that can attract unwanted pests!

4. Regularly check for fleas/ticks

Try using a fine-tooth comb when doing your inspection! This makes it easier to catch underlying pests that might be hiding underneath your pet’s coat. We highly recommend doing this inspection every time you take your pet outdoors.

5. Vacuum rugs and carpets

This is very effective in getting rid of flea/tick eggs and a potential infestation!

6. Use trusted fleas and tick-killing shampoos and sprays

Shampoos like Dog & Cat and Nutriscience are specifically designed to repel parasites from your pet’s skin and fur. You can find these brands and many other options at your nearest Pet Express!

7. Consider oral treatments

Oral treatments like Bravecto and Simparica Chewable Tablets can prevent these pests for up to three months! Check in with your vet to see if these could be good options for your pet’s tick/flea prevention.
