Fun Facts about the Philippines’ Top Dog Breeds!
Last month, SM launched the SM Super Pets Club at the SM Aura Premier’s Paw Park. From pugs and Pomeranians to Labradors and retrievers, all pet parents and breeds are welcome to the biggest pet community in town.
But did you know that Shih Tzus are the most popular breed in the country? Or that chihuahuas’ thin fur makes them suited for Manila weather? Here’s a list with some more fun facts behind your favorite breeds!
Pomeranians
Fun fact: Contrary to their trademark petite size, Pomeranians used to weigh as much as 20-30 pounds before they were bred to be smaller by Queen Victoria of England.
Pugs
Fun fact: The deep wrinkles on pugs’ foreheads were seen as good luck since they resembled the Chinese character for “prince.”
Poodles
Fun fact: Poodles were bred to be hunting dogs and were tasked to retrieve ducks and other birds for their humans. Their breed name is derived from the German word for “splashing in water.”
Chihuahuas
Fun fact: This breed originated from Mexico’s hot desert, and their thin coat makes them more comfortable in warmer weather (and perfect for living in the Philippines!)
Labradors
Fun fact: Labradors are theorized to have been introduced to the Philippines around the 19th century by British settlers!
Shih Tzus
Fun fact: In a recent study by HouseholdQuotes, the Philippines is the only country where Shih Tzus are the most popular dog breed.
Fun fact: Since there’s no definitive pregnancy test for polar bears, some zoos in the US tapped a two-year old Beagle (and the breed’s excellent sense of smell) to sniff out if a polar bear was pregnant.
Golden Retrievers
Fun fact: With the breed’s playful and goofy nature, Golden Retrievers tend to stay young at heart even past their puppy stage.
