Almost all dogs get scared during a storm, and during the rainy season, it’s unavoidable for our fur babies to hear the sounds of heavy rain and thunder. So, how do we help ease their fear and anxiety? Here are some tips and advice from Dr. Rouchelle Alonte on the best way to calm our pets.

What should I do if my pet gets scared a thunderstorm?

You can bring them to a room with dim lighting. It has to be in a room that’s semi-dark; hindi masyadong maliwanag and hindi masyadong madilim. For the dog not to focus too much on the thunderstorm, you can play music or turn on the TV. You can also look into how to make a thunder shirt, using an old scarf or an elastic bandage.

Do you advise pet owners to hug their pets or give them space when they’re scared?

It’s all about soothing them. Giving them a hug is better than leaving your pet on your own. It’s like may kasama kang bata na iyakin. But of course, hugging your pet the whole time until the storm passes might not be realistic. If you can make a thunder shirt, all the better.

Do you have tips on how to make a DIY thunder shirt?

To DIY it, it’s either you need an old long scarf or an elastic bandage that you can readily buy from Mercury. If you know there’s going to be a thunderstorm, might as well prepare an elastic bandage for your dog.

Is there particular music you’d advise to play?

Let it be music that’s infused with Delta waves. Delta waves for humans is for better sleep and to increase memory. For dogs, Delta waves can reduce anxiety. In fact, there are a lot of albums, even on Spotify, that are specifically for dogs. Just don’t play it while you’re driving because humans are also sensitive to Delta Waves and can make you sleepy.
