How to Groom your Shih Tzu?
While German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers are the dog of choice for most people around the world, the Shih Tzu is the top pick here in the Philippines. In fact, a 2021 study by HouseholdQuotes reported that the Philippines is the only country where Shih Tzus are the most popular dog breed.
With a name derived from the Chinese words for “lion dog,” the Shih Tzu is also a breed that can wear many different looks. Have you seen a Shih Tzu with a small ponytail on top and long fur that falls all the way to their feet? This could be the Top Knot Show Cut! If your Shih Tzu has a shorter, more circular fur shape, then they might have the Teddy Bear Cut.
No matter which haircut your Shih Tzu gets, grooming is especially important for this breed. Here are a few grooming trips we’ve gathered for all our Shih Tzu parents!
Comb your Shih Tzu’s hair at least 1-2 times a day
Matted hair is very common when your dog’s grooming is left unchecked. Once the fur becomes matted, your Shih Tzu might even be more prone to skin issues.
Do not cut their eyelashes
If you cut your Shih Tzu’s eyelashes, there’s a possibility that they’ll grow inward and irritate their eyes.
Avoid putting their ears in pigtails
While this looks really cute, this might also cut off the blood circulation to your Shih Tzu’s ears.
Remember their teeth and ears
The Shih Tzu’s short mouth can make food more likely to get trapped in their teeth, while their floppy ears can also be prone to bacteria buildup.
Don’t tie your Shih Tzu’s hair too tight
If you’re going for a knot hairstyle, make sure you tie your pet’s fur gently and loose enough so it doesn’t lead to potential bald spots!
