How to Pet-Parent in the Heat?

We’re here to do some myth-busting about being a pet parent in this heat!

With the continued rising heat index this summer, a good rule of thumb for pet parents: if it’s too hot for you to be outside, it’s too hot for your pet too. But are all pets prone to heat exhaustion? What if I take my dogs to the groomer and shave their coats, should they be safe then? In this article, we’re here to do some myth-busting about being a pet parent in this heat!

Question 1: Are all pets prone to heat exhaustion?

Yes! But while all pets are susceptible to overheating, there are factors that put certain animals more at-risk.

Pets more prone to overheating:

  1. Senior pets (over the age of 10)

  2. Kittens or puppies (under 6 months)

  3. Overweight pets

  4. Breeds with shorter snouts: Shih Tzus, Pugs, Bulldogs, Himalayan Cats

Question 2: Should I shave off all my pet’s fur during the summer?

No! Your pet’s fur actually helps your dog or cat stay cool (and prevents sunburn!) Experts recommend that if you do take your pet for a trim, make sure to leave at least one inch of fur.

Question 3: Is it safe to leave my pet in the car if I turn the aircon on?

No! According to the Animal Kennel Club, the most common cause of heat stroke is dogs being left inside a car. Even if you roll down the windows and even if the temperature feels milder, it only takes a few minutes for your pet to pass out from the heat. It is never worth the risk to leave your pet alone in a car.

Question 4: Do malls allow us to bring our pets indoors during the summer?

Yes! There are more and more pet-friendly malls that are great places for pets (and pet parents) to cool off. When visiting your nearest SM branch, make sure that your pet has a diaper, leash, and complete vaccinations!
