How well do you know your Puspin?
While Puspins are present in practically every area in our country, how much do we actually know about these cats?
In the Philippines, the most popular and most common cat is our very own Puspin! While Puspins are present in practically every area in our country, how much do we actually know about these cats? For this month, the Puspin takes center stage for our Super Pets Club breed spotlight!
Did you know that the Puspin…
… is short for “Pusang Pinoy” or Filipino cat?
They were once named Pusakal, short for Pusang Kalye, but animal advocates in the country fought for a name with more positive implications
… is known for their diverse coat colors?
Since their genetic makeup stems from a variety of cat breeds, the Puspin coat appears in many different colors. However, the calico coat (fur with three or more colors) is found to be the most common.
… is low-maintenance?
Because of their shorter coats, Puspins require less grooming than other cat breeds. However, that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t get checked for fleas, ticks, or other skin issues too.
… have long lives?
Some say that Puspins can live up to 13-20 years! Their longer lifespan may also be due to their genetic composition. With a varied gene pool, mixed-breed cats tend to leave behind recessive genes that could carry illnesses.
… is also called Muning?
For many Filipinos, Muning is also a term they assign to Puspins! It’s also why “Mingming” or “Miming” is a popular cat name around the country.
… is great at pest control?
With their strong prey drive, some have used Puspins for rodent control. Back in 2022, a Puspin named Tanjie went viral when the cat was assigned as pest control officer of Ilioilo Science and Technology University!
… is an award-winning cat?
In last year’s Funtastic Felines Coral Jubilee International Cat Show, a Puspin named Broite bagged four awards—including “Best of Best Household Pet”––among 100 competing cats!
