Happy International Dog Day SPC fam! Since 2004, August 26 has been a day dedicated to celebrating dogs of every breed and kind. In honor of the pets who make our days a bit brighter, here are some of our favorite facts about our favorite dogs!
Your dog can be left- or right-pawed
Just like us humans, dogs have a preferred hand (or paw) to lead with. When they’re reaching for a toy or snack, check which paw they use!
They show love through eye contact
Eye contact can actually be uncomfortable for dogs since they can perceive a stare-down from someone else as a challenge. But if your dog can look at you with soft, relaxed eyes, that’s actually a form of love language for their human.
Dogs are as smart as a two-year-old
Research shows that dogs can learn up to one hundred words and gestures! That puts them at par with the average learning capability of a two-year-old.
Sense of taste is not their strong suit
While dogs can smell and hear much better than humans, they actually only have about one sixth of the tastebuds humans have. This could explain why your dog can be as enthusiastic about a bowl of kibble as your dinner leftovers. Either meal might not taste all that different to them!
Dogs have dreams of their own
Have you ever noticed your dog twitching in their sleep? This could actually be a sign that your dog is in the middle of a dream! Twitching can often occur during the REM stages of sleep where dreams usually happen.
Science says owning a dog might make you more attractive
Some studies have shown that men were more likely to get a woman’s number if they had a dog with them. If you’re looking for a date, you can add being a pet parent to your list of green flags!
They feel what we feel
Do you ever get the sense that your dog knows exactly when to cheer you up? This might be because dogs have a unique kind of empathy. They are able to understand another’s feelings, especially when they’re people who are important to them. Experts have observed that when their owner cries, dogs immediately give them more attention.
In short, dogs really do make us feel less alone.
