Packing your pet’s first aid kit
Have questions on what to pack? In today’s article, we’re breaking down the essentials.
Last month, we covered some tips on how to keep your pet safe during a flood. One of our suggestions was preparing a pet emergency kit.
Have questions on what to pack? In today’s article, we’re breaking down the essentials.
Food and water
We recommend packing three days worth of pet food and water in your kit. Make sure they’re stored in an airtight, waterproof container!
Copies of vaccination records and important documents
If your vet’s clinic stores online records, you can also request for them to have a digital copy of your pet’s medical documents!
Instructions for medication or allergies
Do you have a pet that’s taking medication or has specific medical concerns? Include them in your kit and keep the instructions in a waterproof container too.
Sanitary items
Make sure you have an emergency supply of pet litter, poop bags, wipes in case you need to clean up after your pet!
Leash and crate/carrier
For those with small pets, a sturdy carrier would be useful in times of emergency evacuations. If you’re unsure which carrier is best for your pet, Pet Express has a great selection of different sizes for your dog or cat.
A towel or blanket
An emergency blanket can be important in many ways: if you need to cover your pet to keep them warm, if your pet is injured and you need assistance in carrying them, if your pet gets caught in the rain/flood.
Wound care
Gauze pads, bandages, antiseptic wipes, and cotton balls are essentials in a pet first aid kit too!
A photo of you and your pet together
In case the two of you get separated, a photo might make it easier to identify your missing pet! You can also add a few details on the back (breed, age, sex, distinguishing characteristics).
Once you have your pet emergency kit all packed, always remember to check in on the items at least every month to make sure none of the supplies have expired!
