Pet Care Misconceptions: What’s True? What’s Myth?

In prioritizing pet wellness this 2024, let’s debunk a few commonly held pet care myths and misconceptions.

With so much information about pet wellness and parenting circling around, it’s sometimes hard to navigate the truth from myth. In prioritizing pet wellness this 2024, let’s debunk a few commonly held pet care myths and misconceptions.

Myth # 1: A dry nose automatically means your dog is sick. FALSE!

There are many possible reasons why your dog’s nose can feel a little drier than usual. Did they just take a nap? Since dogs don’t get to lick their noses when they sleep, they sometimes wake up with warm, dry noses. Dryness can also happen after they exercise or after they’re exposed to colder or warmer temperatures than they’re used to.

Myth # 2: All types of milk are healthy for cats. FALSE!

Despite what many milk ads tell you, some cats are actually lactose intolerant. If you notice your cat having upset stomachs when taking milk products, they might be extra sensitive to dairy.

Myth # 3: Spaying and neutering your pet is bad for their health. FALSE!

In recent years, more pet owners in the country are becoming more open to spaying and neutering procedures––and this is a good thing! According to many vets, these procedures can prevent cancers, tumors, and infections from developing for both dogs and cats.

Myth # 4: Cats and dogs are natural enemies. FALSE!

We’ve always seen cats and dogs being pit against each other, but are they born to be enemies? Experts say no! When properly introduced and socialized, a dog and cat can learn to happily coexist.

Myth # 5: One human year is equal to seven dog years. FALSE!

While dogs do age more quickly than we do, this one-to-seven-year conversion is not actually exact. If your dog is ten years old, they’re not necessarily 70. Their aging largely depends on their size, breed, and genetics.

Myth # 6: Fleas are very easy to detect. FALSE!

Unfortunately, fleas are small, fast, and very tricky to spot. Also, 95% of fleas that get caught in our beddings or carpets are in the form of eggs or larvae––even harder to find than its notorious adult insect form. We strongly suggest monitoring and tracking your pet’s flea prescription!
