Pet Matchmaking 101: Tips for Introducing a new dog to the family

For those about to embark on some pet matchmaking, here are some tried and tested tips!

Introducing two dogs to each other is a bit like matchmaking. Are they getting along? Are they compatible? Can they live with each other long-term? And just like any relationship, a bond between two pets takes a lot of work to grow.

If you’re a pet parent who’s thinking of getting a second dog, you have to pay attention to the needs of both your new pet and your current one. For those about to embark on some pet matchmaking, here are some tried and tested tips!

  1. Do the research

Long before you make the decision to bring home a new pet, we highly suggest researching which type of dog fits your current situation. How much space do you have for a second pet? Will your current dog get along with a more active puppy, or would a more relaxed older dog be a better fit?

  1. Use their scents to help them adjust

Scents are a powerful tool to help your pets adjust! If you have a shirt or blanket with your new dog’s scent, you can place it in your current dog’s sleeping area to smoothen the transition.

  1. Create separate spaces

It’s crucial that your new dog feels safe and that your current dog still feels like the alpha. Designating separate spaces, bowls, and toys for your pets will reduce competition and help your current dog feel less like someone is intruding on their territory. If they do decide to share things in the future, let it be their choice.

  1. Supervise the introduction

If possible, it’s better to introduce the pets for the first time on neutral ground that is new to both. Allow them space to sniff and circle around one another.

  1. Give it time

As all matchmakers know, love at first sight is a rare occurrence. Don’t worry if your pets aren’t best friends right away. With enough patience and positive reinforcement, you’ll be surprised at how quickly you’ll all turn into a loving pet family.
