Pet-proofing your Christmas decorations

Here are a few tips to ensure that making your home festive is safe for you and your pets!

Living in a country with the world’s longest Christmas season, we know that Christmas isn’t Christmas without the lights, the trees, the parol illuminating our ride home.

Although, pet parents have a few more things to consider when putting up decorations for the holidays. Here are a few tips to ensure that making your home festive is safe for you and your pets!

1. Consider artificial plants and trees

Setting up a tree in the middle of a room might be too hard of a temptation to resist for your dog or cat. To avoid any pet-tree damages, we suggest getting an artificial tree. Without “outdoor” scents, artificial plants are actually less likely to attract pets.

Speaking of plants, common holiday decor like poinsettias, holly, and mistletoe can be dangerous for your pets too.

2. Place fragile ornaments higher up

A lot of us cover our Christmas trees with ornaments that can carry years of family memories. Let’s not risk any casualties from a wagging tail! For glass and other breakable ornaments, it’s best to place them high up your tree.

3. Clear electric cords and wires

For the pet that loves to nibble and chew, the wires for your Christmas lights can be a real danger. Make sure to tuck away and hide cords so they’re out of reach from your pets.

4. Think twice about candles

A room lit from candles creates the most beautiful ambiance, but also a ton of risk. No matter how careful you are, there’s always a fire hazard with a candle in an unprotected location. Without dampening the holiday spirit, getting battery-operated or LED candles could be a great alternative!

5. Check your vet’s holiday schedule

Unfortunately, the holiday season isn’t exempt from accidents. In case anything comes up with your pet, we strongly suggest for you to ask about your vet’s schedule this December as well. While we want to ensure that we have an emergency hotline during the holidays, let’s respect our vets’ time off too!
