Questions to ask before matchmaking your pet!

Are you looking to find the perfect match for your dog? For a lot of pet parents, the vision of carrying a litter of puppies is very tempting. However, there are many things to consider before breeding your dog.

Are you looking to find the perfect match for your dog? For a lot of pet parents, the vision of carrying a litter of puppies is very tempting. However, there are many things to consider before breeding your dog.

Here are a few questions you should ask before making the jump!

  1. Will it be risky for my dog?

Going through mating and pregnancy can be emotionally and physically stressful for your dog. First thing to consider: is my dog the right age for breeding? A dog younger than two years old might not be mature enough to handle a pregnancy and a dog older than eight would encounter higher risks of health complications.

  1. Is my dog healthy enough?

The first person you should consult before making this decision is your vet. People who advocate for responsible dog breeding also highly recommend doing a health screen of your dog before mating. Certain conditions like hip dysplasia and heart issues can be passed on to your dog’s litter and can impact their quality of life.

  1. Is my dog’s mate compatible?

Just like in all types of matchmaking, appearances can be deceiving! The most handsome dog might not be the most suitable match for your pet. First of all, make sure that their size is a good fit. Breeding a small breed with a larger breed can make pregnancy difficult for the mother. Second, check the lineage of the potential mate to avoid inbreeding. If they’re the same breed, there could be a chance that the two dogs are actually close relatives. Third, do a health screening of your dog’s potential mate too. Are they both up-to-date on their vaccinations?

  1. Do I have plans for the future litter?

What happens to the puppies when they arrive? Mating and breeding takes a lot of time and resources that we sometimes overlook planning for the future. If you’re a pet parent who’s considering breeding your dog, make sure that you have homes lined up for the future puppies. Here at Super Pets Club, we advocate for responsible and ethical breeding!
