Should I give a pet as a gift?
Getting a new puppy or kitten for a special occasion sounds like a dream come true, but is it really the best idea? The key here is that pet-gifting must be done responsibly.
If you’re considering giving a pet as a gift for a birthday or during the holiday season, here’s a checklist of questions you need to answer first!
Discuss this gift idea with the future owner. Never give a pet as a surprise!
Questions to ask:
Does the future owner show a sustained interest in owning a pet?
Is the owner ready to make a possible 15-20 year financial commitment in raising a pet?
Does the future owner have any allergies? How about the people that live with them?
Research where you’re getting the pet from.
Questions to ask:
Are you looking at trusted breeders, shelters, rescue organizations?
Do you know anyone who has adopted/purchased a pet from this same source?
Can the breeder/shelter/organization answer questions about the pet’s history?
Be careful when giving pets to kids.
Questions to ask:
Do you have the parent/guardian’s support to give a pet to their child?
Will there be a parent or guardian who’d assume care for the pet?
Can the household care for a young kid and a new pet?
Consider other ways of gifting a pet.
Questions to ask:
Why not go with your loved one to a shelter and help them choose their pet instead of choosing for them?
Since the holidays can be an overwhelming time for a new pet to settle in, it might be better to give the actual pet on a later date. Instead of giving the pet right away, why not wrap a leash or bowl for your loved one as a clue first?
While we believe having a pet can feel like the best gift, we strongly recommend viewing pet ownership as a lifetime commitment and responsibility. In our Super Pets Club community, let’s all practice responsible pet-gifting!
