In this month’s article, we’re listing down more trends about the millennial pet parent!
The term “pet parent” is the same age as a millennial
Some say that the term “pet parent” was previously unheard of until Purina, a pet-food manufacturer, used the phrase in 1989. The birth of the term could be a sign of the shifting culture in this generation of seeing pets as family.
More millennials run a social media account for their pet
As the generation that saw the rise of social media, millennials brought their pets along with them too. A study by BarkBox even found that millennials tend to post a picture or talk about their dog on social media up to six times a week. This is also the generation that saw the rise of cat videos and online pet celebrities like Grumpy Cat and Pusheen!
Millennials see pets as starter children
While millennials are getting married and starting families later than previous generations, they’ve embraced a new life milestone––getting their first pet. Many pet parents of this generation see their pets as great practice for when they have their own kids or are more open to the option of raising pets over babies.
The budget is bigger for millennial pet parents
One study found that millennial pet parents are more willing to spend on their pets than on themselves. From grooming, natural pet foods, special treats and supplements, there are also more pet products and services to choose from than ever before!
Millennial pet parents consult their vets more
Compared to older pet parents, millennial pet parents are more likely to seek out their vets for advice. They’re more likely to check about their pet’s diet, allergies, or other conditions previously overlooked. Millennial pet parents are also more open to more non-traditional methods like teleconsult or chatting with their vet online.
