Let’s go back in time to when you were thinking about getting your first ever pet. What advice would you give your past self? What’s something you wish you knew about pet parenting?
This month, we gathered a few tips from experienced pet parents for the about-to-be-pet parents!
Pets need a routine
New pet parents should know that pets thrive on consistency. Just like you, pets function better when they have a set time to eat and sleep. If you don’t establish a routine and do things like feed your dog or cat at random times, it will very likely stress your pet out.
Mental stimulation is important
Playtime isn’t just an activity to use up your pet’s time—it’s necessary! Keeping their brains stimulated reduces their stress and problematic behaviors. However, keep in mind that every pet’s preference is different. One toy might be engaging for one dog but might be ignored by another.
A pet’s personality can take a while to show
Some pet parents share how their pets’ personality turned out to be completely different from when they first met their puppy or kitten. For example, a very reserved puppy can turn out to be the most friendly pet when it starts to feel at home. All new pets take some time to adjust and settle in.
Prepare an emergency fund
Every pet parent would agree that a pet is a financial commitment. Budgeting for a pet should go beyond food, litter, or even annual vaccinations. Many pet parents recommend that you set an emergency fund in case something urgent happens!
Pay attention to dental health
Many pets suffer in the long run because their teeth get neglected. Make sure that you start a tooth brushing routine early. It’s much, much easier to get your puppy used to cleaning their teeth and cutting their nails earlier than later.
You’re your pet’s world
While you might have a whole life outside of your pet, your pet’s world revolves around you. Be patient with them, treat them well, and keep them safe.
