Thinking about getting a new pet? Here’s why you should adopt, not shop!

We can all agree that getting your first pet is one of the most special experiences. Ask any pet parent and they can tell you about the moment they knew they found a new addition to their family. But what if we want to make that family a little bigger?

If you’re considering getting a second pet, why not consider adopting your new dog or cat? You might have heard the saying “Adopt don’t shop” and this month’s article lists a few reasons why you should opt for adoption!

  1. Adopting is more cost-effective

Getting a pet from a breeder can be very expensive and for most cases, pricier than adoption fees. Money that would be used in purchasing a pet can now be budgeted towards their food, vet bills, grooming, and medical care.

  1. Some pets could benefit from more company

Does your dog get excited when they’re around other animals? This could be a sign that they’d love to have another pet around! If you have a senior pet, some also say that having another companion can inspire them to keep their body and mind active.

  1. Gain the support of a community

In recent years, volunteer-led groups behind PAWS, Pawssion Project, CARA have created wonderful communities passionate about helping animals around the country. If you adopt from a shelter or an organization, you get to meet people that can support you through your pet parenting journey. You can also consult the ones who first rescued your pet if you have any questions about how best to raise and parent them.

  1. Break the cycle of pet overpopulation

A 2018 article previously reported that the Philippines has over 13 million stray animals. With overwhelming numbers, local pounds unfortunately resort to putting down animals due to lack of space and resources. Fighting for every animal’s welfare is why organizations like PAWS started campaigns like Adopt, Don’t Shop.

  1. You get to save two lives

Many pets who are up for adoption are victims of circumstance. When you become their parent, you have the chance to change their lives for the better––and possibly lives of future pets too! Each adoption makes room in a shelter and organization to take care of a new rescue. If you think about it, every adoption makes a difference for at least two pets.
