Tips for walking your dog in the rain

Thinking of taking your dog for a walk in the rain? Discover essential tips to keep both you and your furry friend safe.

Is it safe to walk my dog in the rain? It depends! If there’s a huge typhoon or any signs of thunder and lighting, we definitely suggest staying indoors. But during a light shower, and if your dog is getting restless without their daily walks, then a walk in the rain might be a good idea. To help keep you and your pet safe, here are some tips for walking your furbaby during the rainy season! 

1. Invest in a doggy raincoat 

Even though a little drizzle is safe for your dog, it’s still very important that they don’t get completely soaked! Getting a raincoat or a waterproof harness that’s bright and reflective is a great safety precaution so that drivers can easily spot your dog through the rain too. 

2. Watch out for puddles 

If you have a dog that loves splashing and swimming, just be extra careful that they don’t get carried away by puddles along the way. For puddles that are deep, you never know if there are sharp objects hidden beneath the surface that could hurt your dog. 

3. Pack drinking water 

Dogs can’t tell whether water is clean or not. If they get thirsty along the walk and see rainwater pooling by the streets, they’ll most likely go for a drink. With all the chemicals and bacteria that gets collected in rainwater, this is very dangerous for your pet. We highly recommend that you pack a water bottle and a portable bowl so your dog doesn’t get tempted!  

4. Don’t forget to dry 

While your dog might give a good shake after the rain, they still need your help to completely dry off. You can use a towel or even a hairdryer for the drying process! 

5. Protect their paws 

   Dog booties and shoes aren’t just cute, but they help protect your pet too! Although, if your dog shows signs that they’re uncomfortable wearing shoes (bites or shakes them off), it’s best to do away with them. In that case, it’s even more important to remember to wipe your dog’s paws after a rainy walk. Don’t forget the fur between their toes! 

   
   

6. Always safety first! 

   Before going outside in the rain, make sure that your dog is properly leash-trained and can follow basic commands. If your dog shows that they’re frightened or uncomfortable in the weather, don’t force them. And if the rain is really strong? It’s better to be safe and wait for better weather to come!
